Located in the center of Madrid in Pl. Tirso de Molina, just 300m from Puerta del Sol, the Teatro Apolo was inaugurated on December 10, 1932, as Teatro Progreso with the zarzuela La verbena de la Paloma. At that time, it was called Teatro Progreso because that was the name of the square until 1939. It was a project by architects Urosa and Saavedra de la Torre, who created a pseudo-Baroque and Art Deco design. The upper floors are accessed from the grand entrance hall, and a bas-relief alluding to the zarzuela can be seen on the mezzanine.
It reopened as Nuevo Apolo on December 17, 1987, presenting an Anthology of Zarzuela. The promoter of this stage was the Granada-born director José Tamayo, and its owner was Ramón Madurga, grandson of the theatre’s original promoter. Since then, great shows from different disciplines have been staged, such as dance, concerts, musicals, and plays, including Sara Baras, Joaquín Cortés, Tricicle, La Cubana, “Maribel y la Extraña Familia,” “Chicago,” the first Spanish version of “Les Misérables,” “Los Morancos,” “Avenue Q,” “El Médico,” “Grease,” and “Gypsy” among the most recent.
In August 2020, ATG Entertainment took over the property, its management, and programming, embarking on a remodeling process that lasted over a year and a half.
In 2021, the remodeling of the Teatro Apolo was inaugurated by Antonio Díaz, ‘EL MAGO POP’, Europe’s top-selling illusionist, with his impressive show “Nada Es Imposible Broadway Edition.” In 2022, it hosted the classic “Singin’ in the Rain,” and in 2023, “Chicago,” the quintessential Broadway musical, was performed.
In November, Cameron Mackintosh’s production of the musical phenomenon LES MISÉRABLES premieres, coinciding with the celebration of the 40th anniversary of its opening in London.
The Teatro Apolo features a large stage and a capacity of over 1,100 seats, multi-purpose and rehearsal rooms, as well as its own cafeteria. It offers all the necessary accessibility facilities so that anyone can enjoy our space, such as direct access ramps to the stalls (platea). Renovated in 2021, its exceptional technical equipment allows for high-quality and complex shows.
